What Happened to our Billboard?

Just days apart.

Our billboard went from new and installed to torn down and destroyed.

Billboards are designed to withstand the elements, so seeing one damaged only days after it was installed is certainly unusual. Whether this was caused by weather, an accident, or an intentional act, we simply don’t know at this point, and we won’t claim otherwise without evidence.

But if this was intentional, it raises a much bigger question.

What kind of culture are we creating when disagreement is answered with destruction instead of discussion?

If people believe our message is wrong, then answer it. Write a response. Make a better argument. In a free society, ideas should compete with ideas—not with destructive behavior.

As Christians, we believe the answer to speech is more speech. We do not respond to messages we disagree with by tearing down pride billboards; we respond by putting up one of our own. If this damage was intentional, we will not retaliate by tearing down yours.

If our ideas are wrong, defeat them with better ideas—not vandalism. 

 “Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” (20 Romans 12:17-19)
